Hydraulic or electric power steering
This is the first fork in the road, and it is not always obvious from the outside. Hydraulic racks use power steering fluid, a pump, and hoses, and were standard on most vehicles through the mid-2000s to mid-2010s. Electric power steering racks use a motor built into or attached to the rack itself and have no fluid reservoir or belt-driven pump. Many manufacturers switched model by model rather than all at once, so two versions of the same vehicle name in different years can use different systems entirely. We confirm which your vehicle has from the VIN before quoting.
Symptoms and what they usually mean
A clunk when turning, a leak of red or amber fluid on hydraulic systems, wandering on the highway, or a steering wheel that binds in one spot are the common complaints. On electric racks, a steering assist warning light or a wheel that suddenly feels heavy points to the motor or its control module rather than the mechanical rack itself, and that is worth ruling out before buying a full rack.
New, remanufactured, or used
Remanufactured racks are rebuilt to factory spec with new seals and wear parts and carry the longest warranty; they are the standard choice for hydraulic racks. New aftermarket racks exist for high-volume vehicles. Used racks with low mileage are an option on vehicles where the rack itself rarely fails and the donor is sound, and we will tell you when that applies rather than push it as a default.
Steering rack sourcing FAQ
It depends on your exact vehicle and sometimes the model year within a generation, since some manufacturers switched systems partway through production. Give us your VIN and we confirm which your vehicle uses before quoting anything.
Steering ratio and rack length can differ between a base trim and a sport or performance trim on the same vehicle. We confirm your trim and options from the VIN so the rack matches your exact steering setup, not just the model.
Yes, where a quality new aftermarket rack exists for your vehicle. For most applications a remanufactured rack offers the best balance of price and warranty, and we quote both so you can compare.
Terms vary by vehicle and supplier and are stated on the quote before you pay. Remanufactured racks generally carry a longer warranty than used units because they are rebuilt with new seals and wear parts.
