Why the mileage is lowJapan's inspection system makes older cars expensive to keep, so engines are retired early. Many arrive with 40,000 to 70,000 miles on them.
Fitment checked against your US carA JDM engine can differ from the US version in emissions equipment, sensors, wiring and mounts. We compare it to your VIN and tell you what carries over.
Warranty terms stated firstThe importer's warranty length and coverage are on the quote, along with any compression or leak-down results the importer provides.
Sourced on requestWe do not hold JDM inventory. We source from importers per order, which means availability varies and we say so honestly on the call.

What a JDM engine is

JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market: vehicles built for sale in Japan rather than for export. Japan's periodic inspection program, the shaken, gets costlier as a car ages, so owners replace cars sooner and the engines come out with low mileage. Importers buy those engines, ship them to the US, and sell them as replacements for the same or a closely related engine in US-market cars. For a Honda, Toyota, Subaru or Nissan owner facing a failed engine, a JDM engine is often the lowest-mileage replacement available at any price.

Call with your VIN before you buy a JDM engineTwo minutes on the phone confirms which US engine you have, which JDM engine matches it, and what parts transfer from your old engine. That call is the difference between a bolt-in and a project.

  • Nissan VQ35 and VQ37 V6s for Altima, Maxima, Murano, 350Z and 370Z, plus SR20 and RB series for enthusiasts.

What changes between a JDM engine and your US engine

Usually less than people fear, but never nothing. Common differences: the intake manifold and throttle body, the exhaust manifold and its oxygen sensor positions, the EGR and emissions plumbing, the alternator and power steering pump, and on some engines the compression ratio or the ECU tune. Most installers swap the intake, exhaust and accessories from the old engine onto the JDM long block. We tell you which items your engine will need transferred before you order.

JDM engine sourcing FAQ

In our experience and the industry's, yes, when the importer is reputable and the engine is installed with fresh gaskets, timing components and fluids. Low miles do not excuse skipping the install checklist. Call and we walk you through what the warranty requires.

Commonly 40,000 to 70,000 miles, because Japanese cars are retired early. Importers state the mileage as best they can from the donor; it is not always verifiable to the mile, and we say so. Call for what is available for your engine.

For most Honda, Toyota, Subaru and Nissan applications the long block matches and the intake, exhaust and accessories transfer from your engine. Some models differ in wiring or emissions parts. We check against your VIN before quoting; call with it.

We source JDM engines per order from importers rather than holding stock, so the honest answer is a phone call away. Tell us the VIN and the engine code, and we check availability the same day.
