Why Subaru parts need a specialist
Every Subaru except the BRZ is symmetrical all-wheel drive with a boxer engine, which means four CV axles, two differentials, and spark plugs that sit inches from the frame rails. Parts differ between the older EJ engines (timing belt) and the newer FB and FA engines (timing chain), so the engine code matters as much as the model.
Subaru parts by category
- Subaru Engine, Fuel & IgnitionEJ engines (2.5i through about 2011, WRX and STI turbos through 2021) use a timing belt — belt, idlers, tensioner, and water pump are replaced together near 105,000 miles.
- Subaru Body & LightingForester (2019+) and Outback (2020+) use steering-responsive LED headlamps on Limited and Touring trims and simpler units on base and Premium; the housings do not interchange.
- Subaru Batteries & ElectricalNearly every Subaru uses Group 35, and the factory battery is on the small side — many 2015-and-newer Outback and Forester owners step up to a higher-CCA Group 35 after a weak battery.
- Subaru Suspension & SteeringFront control arm rear bushings on 2010-and-newer Outback and Legacy are fluid-filled and leak with age; rear wheel bearings are a well-known wear item on Outback and Forester.
- Subaru Brake PartsLegacy and Outback have used an electronic parking brake since 2010, with Forester, Crosstrek, and Impreza following later; the rear calipers carry an actuator, but pads and rotors are conventional.
- Subaru Cooling & AC PartsOn EJ engines the water pump lives behind the timing belt, so it is replaced with the belt; older 2.5s that lose coolant with no visible leak usually have the well-known head gasket seep.
- Subaru Drivetrain & ExhaustSymmetrical AWD means four CV axles and both differentials; torn CV boots and a rumbling driveshaft carrier bearing are the most common Outback and Forester driveline orders.
- Subaru Filters & FluidsSubaru's front differential is a separate sump from the CVT on most models and is often forgotten; front and rear differentials take 75W-90 gear oil on their own interval.
