Warm air from the vents in July is the most common cooling complaint we hear, and the recharge can in the parts-store aisle is the most common wrong answer. Refrigerant does not get used up. If the system is low, it leaked, and a recharge buys weeks. Here is how to read the symptoms and what each one means for the parts.
Warm all the time
Check whether the compressor clutch engages when the AC is switched on: the center of the compressor pulley should spin with the belt. If it never engages, the system is either empty from a leak, so the low-pressure switch is holding the compressor off, or the clutch, relay or compressor has failed. A shop with gauges tells the two apart in minutes. A compressor that engages and makes a grinding or rattling noise is failing internally, and a new compressor must go in with a new drier and expansion valve and a full flush.
Cold at speed, warm in traffic
The condenser sits in front of the radiator and needs airflow to shed heat. At highway speed it gets it from motion; in traffic it depends on the fan. A weak fan clutch, a failed electric fan or relay, or a condenser packed with road debris all give AC that works on the highway and dies at a stoplight. This is a fan problem, not a refrigerant problem.
Cold on one side, warm on the other
On dual-zone systems that usually means the refrigerant charge is low enough that the evaporator only cools partway, or a blend door actuator has failed on one side. A clicking noise behind the dash when the temperature is changed is the actuator.
Cold for a while, then warm
An evaporator that is freezing up from a low charge or a failed cycling switch, or a compressor that is overheating and shutting down. On older systems a clogged orifice tube does the same. This one needs gauges.
Why a recharge alone rarely lasts
A sealed system holds its charge for years. If it is low, refrigerant is leaving through a seal, a hose, the condenser or the evaporator. The can with sealer in it can clog the expansion valve and the drier. Find the leak with dye, fix it, replace the drier, and then charge to the exact weight on the underhood label. That is the repair that lasts.

Questions we get about this
Vehicles built before about 1994 used R-12; from then until roughly 2017, R-134a; most vehicles since 2017 use R-1234yf. The underhood label states it, and the type changes the compressor and the service fittings.
Compressors with clutch, condensers, receiver-driers and accumulators, expansion valves and orifice tubes, evaporators, blower motors and resistors, and blend door actuators, matched to the VIN.
Some kits include the drier and expansion valve; many do not. We quote them together because a compressor installed without them usually fails and the warranty is void.
