Truck Overheats in Traffic Only? It's Usually the Fan, Not the Radiator

Why a truck that runs cool on the highway and hot at a stoplight has an airflow problem, how to check the fan, and when the radiator really is the cause.

The pattern is unmistakable: temperature gauge normal at 60 miles an hour, climbing at every red light, back to normal once you move. On the highway the truck's speed pushes air through the radiator. At a standstill the fan has to do that job, and when the gauge climbs only at a standstill, the fan is not doing it. Replacing the radiator will not fix this.

Trucks with a belt-driven fan

Most V8 pickups and SUVs through the late 2000s, and many heavy-duty trucks today, use a fan on the water pump driven through a viscous fan clutch. The clutch locks the fan when the air behind the radiator is hot. When it wears out it freewheels, and the fan spins too slowly to move air at idle. The test is simple: with the engine hot and off, spin the fan by hand. If it spins freely for more than a turn or two, the clutch is done. A working clutch on a hot engine resists and stops almost immediately. Electronic fan clutches on 2005-and-newer GM and Ford trucks fail the same way and can also set a code.

Trucks with electric fans

Transverse-engine SUVs, most cars, and late-model pickups use one or two electric fans. If the fans do not come on when the gauge climbs or when the air conditioning is switched on, suspect the fan relay, the fuse, the coolant temperature sensor that commands the fan, or the fan motor itself. A fan that runs only on high or only on low points to a failed resistor or control module on vehicles that have one.

Blocked airflow

The condenser sits in front of the radiator and collects road debris, bugs and cottonwood fluff. A condenser packed with debris starves the radiator of air at low speed and the symptom is identical to a weak fan. Look between the condenser and the radiator with a flashlight and rinse from the engine side out. A missing or broken fan shroud has the same effect because the fan pulls air around the radiator instead of through it.

When it is the radiator after all

Overheating at all speeds with the fan working, coolant that keeps dropping, or a radiator whose tanks are swollen or weeping at the seams: that is a radiator. So is overheating under load with a radiator whose fins are corroded away. Overheating on the highway only, with the radiator full, points elsewhere: a thermostat that is not opening fully, a failing water pump, or a head gasket if coolant disappears with no external leak.
