Tacomas stay on the road for decades, which means we quote parts for four generations at once. The traps are specific: a two-wheel-drive PreRunner that uses four-wheel-drive suspension, three cab and bed combinations that change the driveshaft, and an engine change in 2016 that looks minor and is not.
Tacoma generations and engines
| Years | Generation | Engines | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1995–2004 | 1st gen | 2.4 and 2.7 four-cylinder, 3.4 V6 | PreRunner (2WD with 4WD ride height) from 1998; 2001 refresh changed the front end |
| 2005–2015 | 2nd gen | 2.7 four-cylinder, 4.0 V6 | New body and frame; 2012 refresh changed the front end, dash and lights |
| 2016–2023 | 3rd gen | 2.7 four-cylinder, 3.5 V6 with port and direct injection | New body; 3.5 replaces the 4.0; 2020 refresh changed grille and lights |
| 2024–present | 4th gen | 2.4 turbo four, hybrid i-Force Max | New platform shared with Tundra; coil-spring rear on most trims |

Fitment traps on the Tacoma
- PreRunner is two-wheel drive with four-wheel-drive ride height and suspension. Struts, control arms, brakes and body parts follow the 4WD truck, not the 2WD base truck.
- Access Cab and Double Cab with the 5-foot and 6-foot beds give three wheelbases, and the driveshaft, brake lines, fuel tank and bed panels change with each.
- The 2016 3.5 V6 uses both port and direct injection. Injectors, high-pressure pump, intake and coils do not interchange with the 4.0 it replaced, even though the trucks look similar.
- Second-generation frames were subject to a rust campaign; trucks that had the frame replaced may have parts from a different year fitted underneath. Check the old part's markings.
- TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trucks use different shocks, springs and skid plates from SR and SR5 trucks of the same year.
Toyota Tacoma parts FAQ
Tail lights, headlights, mirrors, tailgates, doors and bumpers in the factory color, plus seats and interior trim. Mechanical parts are usually quoted new or remanufactured.
The 2TR-FE 2.7 was used from 2005 to 2023 with updates, so many parts cross between 2nd and 3rd gen trucks, but the earlier 3RZ-FE 2.7 in the first generation is a different engine.
Almost never. Different frame, engines, axles and body. The 2024 Tacoma shares its platform with the 2022+ Tundra, but the parts are still model-specific.
