Most no-start, stalling and check-engine problems on a modern engine come down to a sensor, and sensors are cheap parts that are sold by exact engine code. A crank sensor for one 5.3 will not plug into the next generation's 5.3. We match the sensor to the engine the VIN reports, and we tell you which sensor the code is really pointing at.
Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors
The crank sensor tells the computer where the crankshaft is; without it there is no spark and no injection, so a failed crank sensor is a crank-no-start or a stall-when-hot. The cam sensor sets injection timing and, on variable-timing engines, feeds the VVT system. Codes P0335 to P0339 point to the crank sensor, P0340 to P0349 to the cam sensor. They are often sold together on engines where both are easy to reach.
Mass airflow and throttle position sensors
The MAF sensor measures the air entering the engine; a dirty or failed MAF gives rough idle, hesitation and lean or rich codes. The throttle position sensor tells the computer how far the throttle is open. On engines built after about 2005 the TPS is built into the electronic throttle body and the whole throttle body is the part, which is why throttle bodies are one of our most frequent engine orders.
Oxygen and coolant temperature sensors
Upstream oxygen sensors control fuel mixture and are the first suspect for poor economy and P0171 or P0174 lean codes; downstream sensors monitor the converter and set P0420. The coolant temperature sensor drives the fan and the gauge; a failed one causes overheating in traffic and hard cold starts. All are sold by position, bank 1 or 2, sensor 1 or 2.
Engine Sensors by make
- Chevrolet — Crank sensors on 5.3 V8s and throttle bodies on Cruze and Equinox are frequent orders.
- Ford — Throttle bodies on 3.5 V6 and 5.4 V8 Fords, plus cam phaser solenoids on the 5.4 3-valve.
- Buick — 3.8 V6 crank sensors and throttle bodies on LaCrosse and Enclave.
- Honda — Accord and Pilot throttle bodies and purge solenoids.
- Toyota — Throttle position sensors on older Land Cruiser and Tundra, VVT oil control valves on Corolla.
- Nissan — Rogue and Altima VVT solenoids, Frontier MAF sensors and coils.

Engine Sensors FAQ
Most often the crankshaft position sensor, especially if the engine stalls when hot and restarts after cooling. A fuel pump that has failed gives the same symptom, so we ask whether you hear the pump prime when the key is turned on.
Yes, with a dedicated MAF cleaner, and it often works. If the codes return after cleaning, replace it.
Yes, new and quality used. Some vehicles need a throttle relearn procedure after replacement, which we explain on the quote.
