SUV Sagging Overnight? Air Spring Leak vs Compressor

How to tell whether a sagging Mercedes, Cadillac, Lincoln, Lexus, Land Rover or Ram is leaking air or has a tired compressor, and what to replace first.

An SUV that sits low in the morning and lifts itself after a few minutes of running has an air suspension problem, and the order in which you fix it matters. Replace the compressor first when a spring is leaking and the new compressor will burn out the same way the old one did. Here is how to tell the two apart in your driveway.

One corner or all four

One corner down overnight is a leaking air spring or air strut at that corner, almost without exception. The compressor is doing its job; it simply cannot keep up with the leak once the engine is off. All four corners down, with the compressor running for a long time or not at all when you start the vehicle, points to the compressor, its relay, or a leak in the supply line or valve block.

Confirm the leak

Raise the vehicle to normal height, then spray soapy water on the rubber bellows of the suspect spring and on the line fitting at the top. Bubbles mean a leak. Air springs usually crack at the fold in the rubber where it rolls over the piston, so look there first. If nothing bubbles at the springs, listen at the compressor: a unit that runs for minutes and gets hot is weak or fighting a leak somewhere in the lines.

What to replace

  • A leaking spring: replace it, and its partner on the same axle. A new spring on one side and a ten-year-old one on the other will not level.
  • A compressor that runs constantly with no leaks found: replace the compressor, and on Mercedes GL, ML and R-Class the relay with it, because the relay is a common failure and a stuck relay kills the new compressor.
  • A compressor that never runs: check the relay and fuse before condemning the compressor.
  • Repeated failures on an older vehicle: consider a coil-spring conversion kit, which removes the air system entirely. The ride is firmer and self-levelling is gone, but the cost is a fraction of four OEM air struts.
